BeatPick.com news

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

Finally the BeatPick.com blog is back on full roll.

We are indeed writing from a gorgeous new office in central Rome, Italy, and though the move has been rather frantic, things have been moving steadily and successfully forward.

On the licensing front much has happened. Free online dancing videogame Audition has licensed 10 of our tracks that can be heard during the game, from Italian dance producer Acidman to retro-groove architect Synthead, from gangsta rapper Tony Cash to Swedish pop-rock band Mole, plus many more. The game got the whole office dancing away, so why not give it a try, it’s truly entertaining stuff.

Although we can’t reveal the title of the film (as it has still not been released), Twentieth Century Fox has licensed Australian songwriter Jamison Young’s excellent track Memories Child for an upcoming blockbuster film. Obviously we’re very excited by the possibility to hear one of the tracks from our catalogue in a Hollywood production. Just a slight hint: it has something to do with aliens…

Italian regional candidate, and successively winner of the run for president of the Lazio region Nicola Zingaretti also licensed a BeatPick.com track, Sharif’s You’re My Girl (an all time favourite from our catalogue), for his political campaign videoclips. Given the final result, it was a fortunate choice!

What’s more we have recently signed a deal with historical Hip-Hop label Syntax Records allowing us to work with their music offline (ie. for licensing opportunities). So although you won’t be seeing any of their exceptional records on our site, any professional needs for Hip Hop or similar can be met with cream of tha crop productions!

Ultimately, we’d love you to check out some of the newest entries to our catalogue: You Are A Hologram’s guitar-driven second offering of excellent Indie Rock, Songs for the Ether; the highly entertaining refined power-pop by Maryz Eyez; Italian based projects sMk (avant-electro-Jazz) and Ad Libitum, where the sounds of an analogic flute meet Ambient electronica in a truly original fashion.

Enjoy!!!

The Latest Beatpick.com Success Stories!

Friday, February 15th, 2008

Long time, no write….

Yet at Beatpick.com we’ve hardly had a second for breathing over the last couple of months, while discovering new talents (check out our brand new music section on the homepage), and following some of our favourite artists in their latest successes.

At the beginning of the year English adopted Italo-songwriter Cris Tanzi scored her second personal featuring slot on a Mercedes Benz mixtape, with her gorgeous tune “The Storm” (download for free, by clicking here), a love song with a tortured dark twist. At this very moment Cris is touring the USA for the very first time, and we’d love to wish her all the best of luck in conquering New York & co…. To view her tour dates, check out her MySpace page

Also, why not give a look to her video for her album’s opening song, “Enough”? Here’s the link to this cute, lo-fi promo (You’ve got to love those dancing dinosaurs!).

Meanwhile, electronic mad scientist, software creator and Qoob mastermind Tobor Experiment’s “Failure #5″ (to download the track for free, click here) was licensed for a most ambitious and brilliant project: the “Cloud” Installation by Troika for British Airways at Heathrow Airport. What is it? I’ll leave the description to the creator himself:

” ‘Cloud’ is a five meter long digital sculpture whose surface is covered with 4638 flip-dots that can be individually addressed by a computer to animate the entire skin of the sculpture. Flip-dots were conventionally used in the 70s and 80s to create signs in train-stations and airports. We were fascinated by their materiality, by the way they physically flip from one side to the other. The sound they generate is also instantly reminiscent of travel, and we therefore decided to explore their aesthetic potential in ‘Cloud’. ”

Want to see it at work, creating cool, futuristic patterns? Want to hear how well Tobor Experiment’s music fits with the artwork? Check out the video, here. I hope passengers don’t miss their flights while staring at it!!!!!
Last but hardly least, we’re delighted to hear our very own Demetrios Katis, Greek composer of Epic Scores, won the First Prize at the Los Angeles Music Awards in the Classical section. A truly deserved accomplishment, in an already a success-filled career (Demetrios is part of the obligatory study program for all Greek music conservatories). Click here to see Demetrios picking up the prize! You can also download one of his magnificent battle themes for free, by clicking here! Be warned, it’ll make you want to dress up like a warrior and go looking for some orcs!

Beatpick@Enzimi 2007

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

On the 29th November 2007, a variegated and brave (it was pouring with rain outside!) crowd assembled at the ex-Mattatoio of Rome to participate in an evening organized by Beatpick.com.

The magnificent location was packed with interactive installations organized by the best projects chosen in the Enzimi 2007 contest “Talent’s out!”, including treasure hunts for hidden teddy bunnies, free food hung on clothe-dryers, video-art installations…. and Beatpick’s very own fire-spitting dragon!

The evening kicked off with jazz trio I’m Anita, whose masterful real-time synchronization of 20s mute films astonished the crowd both for originality and audacity.

DJ Coppola’s Beatpick selection was followed by a semi-acoustic exhibition by Leo Pari, who re-proposed the show he successfully brought to the Beppe Grillo V-Day public.

From then on, the night belonged to some of Beatpick’s most brilliant Electronic artists. Autobam, accompanied by Video-art master Quayola, gave a demonstration of pure class with his intricate minimalist experiments, while milanese duo EgocentriX got the whole house dancing with their Electro-groove bulldozer tunes.

Last but not least, Synapsya’s thought-provoking beats and waves closed the evening with an emotional twist.

Beatpick.com was extremely honored to be part of such an important event, and is also terribly proud of the result. All through the evening people stopped by our stand, receiving free compilations, and discovering our philosophy.

If you missed out, too bad - you should have been there! But don’t worry, here are a few goodies from the evening!

Enzimi is an organization focused on letting the Talent Out, literally!
Their focus is on promoting emerging art, music, trends and crazy new ideas that other wise lacks attention. Next Thursday, November 29th, the attention will be focused on BeatPick artists accompanied by live visual art! Together with Enzimi, this artistic event will be held at Mattatoio Testaccio in Rome, Italy at 10pm. No entrance fee (view map).

They have won many awards for adapting their music to classic short films so don’t miss out! Also performing will be Leo Pari, our Italian rock funk artist with visual artist Dj Patchwork Video Crew. Our drum & bass kings, electronica masterminds and minimal down-tempo geniuses, Intiman, Autobam, Egocentrix and Sinapsya will be accompanied by Peter Damianovich and Sara Taigher’s live visuals. Rome has been dieing for an event like this so if you’re in the neighborhood come and see what will be the coolest independent artistic event to hit Rome’s doorstep.

Fiera di Roma, Midia & Romics

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

Last month BeatPick joined hundreds of international businesses at the Digital Entertainment & New Media exhibition at the new Fiera di Roma, in Rome Italy. The Fiera di Rome is one of two exhibition centers in Italy.

BeatPick had a great time at the event and planning weeks in advance was well worth it. The stand, located in the Midia section next to Romics (comics and animation festival) looked amazing and BeatPick artists could be heard throughout the event. I guess you could say BeatPick brought the “party”! The speakers for the event were connected to three motion detector flat screens with animated graphics created by Sara Taigher, a video graphic designer. Each screen was based on a particular genre with graphics and music blasting the second a person stood in front of a particular screen.

Benjamin Ginsborg, one of many BeatPick employees in charge of artist submissions assisted at the event stating,

“Midia event is a great opportunity for any type of business- even small businesses have a chance to network with bigger giants in the industry. We’ve already made some great connections, and who would’ve thought that Batman, Darth Vader and Donald Duck would actually visit a Beatpick.com installation? Not only did I witness them jump from screen to screen but Darth actually got along with Batman.”

Fedora Package 8

Tuesday, November 6th, 2007

fedora-final.jpg

If you’ve ever played free games online then you must know Fedora, a Linux based operating system that hosts the latest in open and free source software. This global community operating Fedora is known as The Fedora Project, which is leading the advancement of open software and content online. In-fact, not only can you download and play the games for free but you can create and add onto the game itself. With over 150 games available for free, it’s hard to find the right music with the right copyright. Fedora had recently discovered that the music in their game RocksnDiamonds was restricted by copyright and they would have been forced to leave the game out of the Fedora 8 package! Luckily for Fedora, BeatPick had just what they were looking for.

A Crowning Experience “Off Rythm” and Synthead’s “Come to Me” were picked for the RocksnDiamonds game which is featured in the updated Fedora 6, 7 and 8 packages. Without this collaboration, it would not have been possible for Fedora to keep the game. This is just another example of how ridiculous copyright can be and lead to a projects arrested development. Linux games are non commercial and are guaranteed fun for users all over the world, who wouldn’t want to be apart of it?!

Not only does BeatPick look forward to possible future collaborations but we can’t wait to play the latest games! To play the coolest games on the web FREE thanks to The Fedora Project, click on this link and bring it on!

Special thanks to Jamendo and One Laptop per Child Association

Friday, October 19th, 2007

One Laptop per Child Association (OLPC) is a non-profit organization focused on providing children around the world with $100 laptops. Thanks to the OLPC, children in developing countries will finally have access to opportunities never thought possible before. $100 laptop per child exposes these children to world ideas, contributing to the world as a whole, bringing knowledge and opportunities to areas where global information was previously deemed unattainable.

olpc laptop.jpg

Jamendo, a free music community where artists allow everyone to download and share their music, joined with OLPC to bring a selection of Creative Commons music for their laptops. Jamendo’s founder Sylvain Zimmer, stated that “It makes a lot of sense for us to help OLPC because their laptop is an excellent way to extend the music sharing values we defend to the developing countries and to children in particular (Jamendo Blog) .”

Thanks to Jamendo, BeatPick was able to contribute to this cause by placing music compilations of Beatpick artists on the $100 laptops. Not only is this a wonderful opportunity for BeatPick and Jamendo to lend a helping hand, but it also advertises the amazing aspects of Creative Commons, something that both companies truly believe in. Here at BeatPick.com, we are blessed and honored to be working with Jamendo and the OLPC project!

Support Creative Commons!

support-cc21.jpg

If you didn’t know already, here at BeatPick.com we are big fans and faithful followers of Creative Commons (CC), but in order to sustain Creative Commons, fundraising is crucial!

CC needs support in order to guarantee access to scientific, cultural and educational content that is pre-cleared for use by its authors. This in-turn brings a balance into the fragile network of digital technologies by enabling a participatory culture; “A culture in which everyone can actively engage in the creativity that surrounds us (CC Blog).” This is the legal frame work behind Beatpick, a fair way in dealing with Independent artists who want recognition of their work, need the publicity- but are unable to do so (unless of course, they sign over the rights of their work to money-hungry music labels = unfair!).

All Beatpick musicians and fans should know that if it was not for Creative Commons, BeatPick might not have existed at all! But with enough support, Creative Commons can raise awareness and educate communities on a global scale! If you believe in the cause like we do here at BeatPick.com, then join the fundraising campaign and let’s make a difference together!
